The Secret City...

Oak Ridge Tennessee is known as "The Secret City"

It's quite a history lesson and one that I find fascinating at the moment. To think that those gals worked on a project without knowing what they are truly doing until the newspaper announced it.

I'm halfway through this one and so glad I picked it up to read!

Time Flies...

Wow, Almost a year has passed since I last posted here....

I have certainly been reading in that year but sadly, this blog took such a backseat. Life has kept us all busy here with 3 kids in school, school projects, teenage drama, middle-child drama, our oldest moving out on her own, buying a house then 8 months later selling this house. A huge move to another state....

Today we are settled in a new state and renting while we decide on where to purchase a house, which part of our town we would love more...that's the question...

So I'm picking up the blog and reviewing books again, reading to relax...

I'm catching up on book blogs too...if you have one Please post your link down below...I'll become a regular visitor!

House of Furies...

It has been a long time since I was able to totally submerge myself into a story, one of which I immediately felt as if I was the main character.

Louisa, the main character, seems to be just a random thief living on the streets trying to survive after Life has dealt her a couple of hard blows.

After she meets an old cranky nag on the street, her life becomes anything but boring and quite frightening.

She never strays too far from gaining the truth and at the end is rather accepting of her fate.

I eagerly await the next book!

from Amazon....
An all-new gothic horror series from the New York Times bestselling author of Asylum.
After escaping a harsh school where punishment was the lesson of the day, seventeen-year-old Louisa Ditton is thrilled to find employment as a maid at a boarding house. But soon after her arrival at Coldthistle House, Louisa begins to realize that the house’s mysterious owner, Mr. Morningside, is providing much more than lodging for his guests. Far from a place of rest, the house is a place of judgment, and Mr. Morningside and his unusual staff are meant to execute their own justice on those who are past being saved.
Louisa begins to fear for a young man named Lee who is not like the other guests. He is charismatic and kind, and Louisa knows that it may be up to her to save him from an untimely judgment. But in this house of distortions and lies, how can Louisa be sure whom to trust?
Featuring stunning interior illustrations from artist Iris Compiet, plus photo-collages that bring Coldthistle House to chilling life, House of Furies invites readers to a world where the line between monsters and men is ghostly thin.

The Couple Next Door

I had read so much hype about this book so I had to see what the fuss was about. I'm glad I did! This was just what I needed to take a break from reading YA.

AANNDD..... this definitely left me guessing till the very end. Usually I'm pretty quick to pick up on plots and who-done-it's, not this one!

I still think that this is a pretty creepy story, one of which could easily be scripted into a movie.

Who could even do this in real life?

It all started at a dinner party. . .

A domestic suspense debut about a young couple and their apparently friendly neighbors—a twisty, rollercoaster ride of lies, betrayal, and the secrets between husbands and wives. . .

Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all—a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco  soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they've kept for years.

What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family—a chilling tale of  deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.

This Life I Live

I hadn't heard about this duo until I saw a YouTube video of them. Such a sweet song that instantly brought tears to my eyes. When my husband arrived home from work that night I played it for him twice.

We looked up more of their songs and watched a few episodes of their show. Then one morning on the Today show I remember seeing a blurp about her cancer...

Fast forward to a wonderfully sweet story that will pull at your heartstrings. I believe that this was one couple that after getting past their own struggles early on in life they just clicked, fully belonging together.
From the book:
By inviting so many into the final months of Joey’s life as she battled cancer, Joey and Rory Feek captured hearts around the world with how they handled the diagnosis; the inspiring, simple way they chose to live; and how they loved each other every step of the way. But there is far more to the story.
“My life is very ordinary,” says Rory. “On the surface, it is not very special. If you looked at it, day to day, it wouldn’t seem like much. But when you look at it in a bigger context—as part of a larger story—you start to see the magic that is on the pages of the book that is my life. And the more you look, the more you see. Or, at least, I do.”
In this vulnerable book, he takes us for the first time into his own challenging life story and what it was like growing up in rural America with little money and even less family stability.
This is the story of a man searching for meaning and security in a world that offered neither. And it’s the story of a man who finally gives it all to a power higher than himself and soon meets a young woman who will change his heart forever.
In This Life I Live, Rory Feek helps us not only to connect more fully to his and Joey’s story but also to our own journeys. He shows what can happen when we are fully open in life’s key moments, whether when meeting our life companion or tackling an unexpected tragedy. He also gives never-before-revealed details on their life together and what he calls “the long goodbye,” the blessing of being able to know that life is going to end and taking advantage of it. Rory shows how we are all actually there already and how we can learn to live that way every day.
A gifted man from nowhere and everywhere in search of something to believe in. A young woman from the Midwest with an angelic voice and deep roots that just needed a place to be planted. This is their story. Two hearts that found each other and touched millions of other hearts along the way.

It Started With.....

My love for reading started with Nancy Drew.

Like most girls my age way back, that Summer we were visiting my Grandma and I was bored. She handed over the very first book in the Nancy Drew series that she had in a Forgotten Bookshelf in her spare bedroom...the whole series just sitting there waiting for another unsuspecting little girl to solve mysteries with Nancy.

Now I'm in my 30s and have 2 incomplete sets of the original yellow spinned series.
I read just about everything that I have time to read and in an age of kids on 2 electrical devices at once I'm slowly turning our middle girl into a bookworm too.

I hope to encourage that 1 person that has lost the joy in picking up an actual book and smelling the pages,  bookworms know just what I'm talking about!
